Now that we live at least part of the year in Illinois, I thought it might be interesting to see how and where people in the state voted for their preferred candidates.
I know the feeling of living in a liberal college town. I'm in Lawrence KS, which went for Harris about 2-1 in a dependably red state.
One of the initiatives on our ballot was to increase a sales tax (not a big one, just from 0.05% to 0.10%), with the proceeds going toward affordable housing and helping the homeless. It passed.
We help the homeless so much we attract them from all over. We bought 75 8x8 foot shelters at an extra high price ($15K apiece, including shipping) to house them, then put most of those in a residential neighborhood over the complaints of the residents.
We live in a small town near the college town, but the liberal ideology spreads its tentacles county-wide. Our town is so lucky that it boasts not just one but two government subsidized high-rise apartment buildings for low- or no-income people. They were built several decades ago so it’s nothing new here. This county’s sales tax is the highest in the entire region.
Thanks so much for providing the link to the interactive map. I moved to Illinois to a small community about an hour south of Chicago 🤪 (my only son and his family and my grands live near by, is the only darned reason I'd ever take up residence in Illinois, or at least this part of Illinois). My county would have gone Trump if 4265 low information or stupidly stubborn voters hadn't cast their vote for RFK, Jr. Can't cure stupid. Not that it would have made any difference, but still.
Amen to that! At least the county in question is not as blue as the infamous Cook County. Blue, blue go away and don’t come back another day. Red, red grow more strong and stay ‘round here for very long!
Hi Skeptical. I’ve heard something about that crazy law, but I really don’t know the specifics. I’m living part time in Southern Illinois. The majority of people here are common-sense conservatives. Unfortunately, the north part of the state controls the politics and laws. Maybe people are finally waking up in response to the far left overreach. One can at least hope and pray!
As someone in NYC, I know exactly what you mean.

You’re welcome! Our son, grands, and an aging mom brought us back. Besides, it feels like home even if the politics do stink.

Does Illinois still have that crazy law that gives no cash bail to everyone up to and including people charged with 2nd degree murder?

You're a poet, and don't I know it!
